How Redwood Landfill & Recycling Center Operates

Each load of waste is measured or weighed and specific information about its origin is documented. Loads that do not meet the permit specifications are not accepted. Redwood's regulatory permits strictly regulate the type and amount of waste that can be received. Redwood reports daily tonnage totals and waste types to the Local Enforcement Agency (Marin County LEA). Material to be recycled is diverted to separate recycling areas for processing. Material that is not recycled is placed in cells. Throughout the day, heavy equipment operators crush and compact the wastes into the disposal cell. This process forms a tightly packed layer of waste, reduces settlement, and conserves landfill airspace.

At the end of each day, bulldozers spread a layer of compacted soil or alternative cover, such as shredded wood waste over the exposed garbage. This daily covering keeps the waste in place, controls wind blown litter, helps keep out rainwater, and minimizes odors. It also deters scavenging animals and is required by state law.

Recycling is a key priority for Redwood Landfill & Recycling Center - we recycle 50% of the material we receive and account for 33% of all of Marin's recycling. Redwood accepts and recycles the flowing materials:

  • Concrete and asphalt is crushed and used for onsite roads and winter pads
  • Green waste (yard waste and wood waste) is sent through a grinder and used for composting, Alternate Daily Cover (ADC), and/or erosion control
  • Class B biosolids are mixed with shredded wood waste and used for ADC
  • Clean soil and non-hazardous minimally contaminated soil is used for waste cover and onsite construction projects such as levee maintenance
  • Construction & Demolition Debris is collected at Redwood Landfill and sent to San Leandro for sorting and recycling
  • Commingled recyclables from the public are also collected at Redwood Landfill and sent to Novato Disposal for recycling.

Compost Operations

Redwood Landfill is the largest composting facility in Marin County. The final compost product is available for wholesale to farms and other industrial users. Redwood is working toward certification of its compost product for approved use at organic farms and wineries.
